With thirty eight States in the Union and little uniforniity in the time o: holding thu Iectious, the interval which elapsos betweeu the close of one groa campaign in whioh all partioipate aut the opening of local campuigns in vari ous parts of the country is a very shor one. Thore is ono coutinual round o olections. The late Presidential cauipaign was not suttlod, so far as thu im medíate rusults wero eoncerned, unti the close of February, und Murch was not half through before the New Hampghii'o electiou engrossed a lmge sharo oi the popular interest in that Stato, anc attruclud more or loss national attuution. Close upon the heels of the New Ham pshire election cauie that in Khodo Inbind, Michigan in the meantirae liaviug held a judicial election, With the lapso of about two months Georgia voted upon thu question of a oonstitutional convention, and now, although the nearest election of importanco is somi! mouths off, caucuses and conventions, preliuiinary to those eleetions, are beginuing to be held. The fust State to hold an election is Alabania, in August, the eleution being of minor importanco. Then comes Cal iforuia, ou the first Wednesday iu September, and although a Governor is not to be chosen, the election is clothed with more than ordinary importance trom the fact that the election of a United States Senator will dovolve upon the Legislature then chosen. The term of the California Senator who first retires does not expire until Maroh 3, 1879, but the Legislature chosen in September will be the last selected prior thereto. The Demócrata will have an immense advantage in the legislativa 6lection trom the fact that of twunty Senators who huid untii 1880 sixteen are Demócrata and throe Bepublicans, one being independent. If the Dmuocrats do even half-way woll, they will have a majority on joint ballot in the Legislature and sucure the succession to Sargent. Closely followiug the California olection comes that of Maine, at which Governor, State oflicors and mombera of the Legislature will be chosen. TIiíh occurs on the second Monday of September. On the second Tuesday in October eleotions occur in Ohio and lowa. In both States Governors and Rupresenttitives are to be chosen. Thü Legislaturu eleoted in the former 'will also select Stauloy Matthows' sucoessor in the United States Senate, although Mutthews' term, like that of Smgent, does uot expire uutil 1879. The political complexion of the next United Statts Senator f rom Ohio will be known trom ;hat of the Legislature, and Hayos will not be long in knowiug whether he will ueed to use his influence with Ohio legïslators and with would-be ltepublican Senatorial candidatos to bring about ;!ie eleotion of tho brother-in-law of his urother-in-law. On the first Tuesday aftor the first Monday in November soveral States choose Governors and Lcgislatures, iu whole or in part, among them Massachusetts, Miune3ota, Mississippi, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin New York elects minor State officors, headod by Secretary of State, half of the State Senators and all of tho membors of tho Assembly. The Senators elected hold 'or two years, and will therefore pnrticpate in tho electiou of United States Senator which occurs in January, 1879, when a successor to Sonator Conkling will be chosen. Punnsylvania also holds a minor State lection on tho Tuosday iftor the first Monday in November - Free Press.
