Ia Governor Croswell's Fourth of July oration at Jackson he spoke as follows of hia experience at Adrián in his early days : " The men of years who are here wül bear me wituess thut the stringency of the times followiug the pariics of 1837 and 1857 was greater than at present. Why, I well reineinber in those days money was so soarce thatit was difficult toget twenty-five cents in silver to pay the postage then required on an ordinary letter. Our circulating medium con8isted mainly of wildcat bank-notes, individual shinplasters, and orders on stores. When I worked at my trade, a fellow-workman wanted to consummate an engagement with a fair friend of the opposite sex. He called on our boss for money sufficient to pay the clerical fee usual on such occasions, but he could not get it. Oup employer told him that he had not taken ton dollars in a month. But being a man fertile in expedienta, he suggested to the workman that he wouid give him an order for the amount of the marriaga fee on a minister for whoin he w.is soon to build a house. This was finally accepted and used, although it liked to have broken up the raatch, as the preacher was of the Orthodox Baptist persuasión, and at first the woman protested that she never would be married by a close communion olergyman of that denomination. She relented, however, and they were duly united in matrimony, and the order paid the bill. You would consider the times very hard indeed now, if you were foroed to such straits as we were Uien to get raoney or secure work.
