Mr. Frank Buckland tried ;o teacli him to write, but, althougli he id make some marks on the paper, he jreferred to cariy the pencil to his nouth, and swallowed about an inch of ae best Cumberland lead. Pongo's faorite position is to sit on the floor and mg a stick or an umbrelïa, and he is jleased to be trusted with an umbrelïa, lthough he does not always deserve the onfiilence, because he lias a tendency to pen it in a new and expeditious way, nd no umbrelïa frame can resist his ery great muscular strength of arm and aw. He drank half a glass of beer in rhe presence of the audience, and also te some roast beef and potatoes ; but rdinarily he lives chiefly on vegetables, nd makes enormous meals of them. n the morning they give him milk and ïuits, cherries, currants, raspberries, te. At midday he has a basin of )oiled rice, and anything else that he an get. In the course of the afternoon ie has more fruit, and perhaps some au sucree of wine and water. In the vening more milk is brought, and this, ■with bread and butter and eggs, completes his supper. He goes to bed at 8, ind. sleeps as late as 8 the next mornng. But he has learned to smoke - at east when the cigarette has an amber mouthpiece, for he does not like the aete of tobáceo.
