A very funny passage occurred during the morning. Mr. Hinton alluded to a man in front of him as a "miserable dog." The gentleman indioated aróse and wanted to know why he should be called a dog. Mr. Hinton - "You called me aliar, sir." The Gentleman - "I beg your pardon, sir; indeed, I did not." Mr. Hinton - " I was within the sound of your voice. " The Gentleman - "You are mistaken; I said the 20th of July." This was the key to the difficulty. Mr. Hinton thereupon made a graceful and ampie apology. Chaüncey Bose, of Terre Haute, Ind., was an exceedingly modest pliilanthropist. He once sent a check for $5,000 to anothor town to have it mailod there to the address of a charitablo institution in Ohio, doing this to conceal the source of the donation. Mits. Crapo, who orossed the ooean in a dory with her husband, is very pious. She declares that they would have been drowned in a storm had not God interposed, in answer to ljr prayer, aad prougkt about a onlm. I
