In Berlín there are, about 100 f emnles omployed in the telegraph office, and amoug them are to be founil Avorncn of good standing in society. Thoso ivho enter are trained in the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge in a special school, established by the postoflice authorities. The preliminary exaininfition is higher in its reqüirements than in England, comprising English, French, geography, and the construction of Germán sentencos. A three months' course is required in the practising rooms, whero the management of the apparatus is taught, and a practical examination is then passed. Lectores upon physicsand chemistry are then attended twice a week for five months, after which an appointment is given. Then another written and verbal examination must be passed upon the internal management of the telegraph service, and the uses of the various portions of the apparatus. Wlien all these trials have been successfully passed the canclidate receives a permanent appointment. The service is in great demand, and the work of the ladies is said to be highly satisfactory.
