Krom tbc LoulBTÜlfl Courier-J ournal. The happy reformation effected in th Hou. Zachariah Chandler must be very cbeeriug to those who have at heart the purificaiion aud pacifícation of States. If only hia iinprovetnent has iu it the elciuents of permanence, he may yet riso ia the esteeiu of those who have so long looked upon him with distrust and aversión. Who knows, now, but that tbia tremendous old Hichigander will keep away trom Washington, continue in the paths of usefulaess and goodness upon which he has eutered, and at lengtb, full of years, go down to sleep beneath an itntnense monuuient, raised to his revored uiemory by the citizens of South Carolina and Louisiana, clamorous to contribute somethiug to the boloved statesinan who retired not quite a Cinciunatus, but a passablo imitation, in the spring of the blessed year 1877. To those who may be hardeued enough to doubt that Zachariah is not the same old Zach. that be was, let it be made known that he spake as here follows, to a newsp'apor correspondent, only the other day : ' I don't know anything about politics. I have been fishing hunting and yachting all suinmer, and, have gained fourteen pounds. I can teil you all about fishing and hunting, fencing and ditching. I know sometbing about Devons and other shorthorns, and have thé beet buil in America, if that is of any public interest ; but on politics I must pass." He is in Washington fcr but a few days, and will presently be broathing purer air, " smiting the tall tomato tree " of his honest acres, porhaps, and forgetting in the melody of the milkmaid and the soft lowing of the home-bound kine the voxations of a long and unscrupulous political oareer, Instead of writing circulare to campaign committees and telegraphing about troops, he will be brightening the pages of agricultural weeklies with hints on gap es in chickens and making paragrnphs headed " Death to Cabbage Worms." Many happy days to Farmer Chandler. May he hereafter " Bugar off" in a more respeotable pot than the political caldron has evor been.
