-Betwücu tho hours oí l a uu 1 o elock Wednesday morning Constable üeo. W. Brown, who is also night-watchmuu on tho University grounds, discovered smoke issuing from a fourtk story wiiidow of the south wing of tho maiu building. lío iinínediately aroused janitor Ottley and geueral alarm was souudcd. When Ottley reached the place tho fire was burning in tlie wood room between two recitation rooms, but his presence of mind iii keeping doors and Windows closed prevented a draught, aud water was brought in j)ails and the liro extinguished before the department got their engines ready for use. The room which the closet or woodroom adjoins had been used duringthe evening by the Glee Club, and it i uuderatood that the fire was caused by throwing liglited cigar stubs into wooden spittoons. Smoking is prohibited in uny of the University buildings, íiud the rule oujjht to be rigidly enforced and any person violatiug it excludod írom the institution. Had the uight been wiudy and the discovery not so prompt the loss would have been great, perhaps irreparable.
