The Vatican has decided not to raake Columbus a eaint, because he never was one. That is the sense of the opinión expressed by the congregations. Tliey base their reiusal to beatify him on the grounds that his Christian virtues have not been exempliñed by any great deed; that, apart f rom hs disoovery of America, his public and private life were open to grave reproach; that, until now, nobody evor thought of regarding him as a saint or invoking him as such; and, iinally, that it is veiy doubtful whether he died a good Catholic.
