A worthy and elderly divino from the rural regions, who has zealously labored for a number of years in his divine calling in the trae spirit of meek and innocent Bimplicity, eame to the city a few days ago. His visita to the city are not very frequent, and they occur at great intervals. He has not quite so much followed te world's progreesinscientitic advancements and discoveries as he is interestcd in the wayward trials and viciseitudes of his own little band of sinners in the rural field. He dropped in at the office of a companion of his youth, tlie chief of a large and extended manufacturing establishment. They have a quiet, plea=ant chnt in the elegant, cozily-furnished apartment. One of the novelties in the room is a telephoue connecting it with the faotory aome dozen miles off. Our friend tho chief is suddenly called out; the revered geutleman remains alone in the room. Ho pulls out the latest tracts, ad juste his specs, nestlcs down in the fauteuil and begins to read. "Ello!" in sepulchral tones. Looks up. Thinks it is outside. " El-low ! Wake up, old boy." Oar divine starts upand gazesaround. " Why the devildon't you answer?" " I - I - beg - beg - your " " What in h- 11 are you doing?" continĂșes the telephone. "Really - my dear - dear sir," gasps our kind sir, swnying unsteadily through the room. "Order down two car-loads of coke and a barrel of brimstone." "Lord have mercy on their souls," mumbles the preacher, in panic-stricken terror. "Send down a new pack, a box of cignrs and a half-dozen bottles of Joe Murch's best." This was too much. The elderly divine bolt8 through the door, flies down the street, boards the first train homeward, and never gets over his exeitement until he has landed safely in the parBonage in the niral domain. A few days after our worthy friend, tho manufacturing chief, receives a long, kind epistle, offering earnest prayers for the salvation of his soul, and that God may flnally purge him from all the sins and great wickedness with which he is surrounded. - Clcvclan d Ilcrald.
