During ono of tlie college vacations Daniel and his brother returned to thcir father's, in Salisbury. Thinking he liad ii right to some return for the money he had expended on their education, the father put scythes into their hands and ordered them to mow. Daniel made a few sweeps, and then, resting his seythe, wiped the sweat from his brow. His father said, " What's the matter, Dun ?" " My seythe don't hang right, sir," he answered. His father flxed it, and Dan went to work agnin, but wita no better success. Something was the matter with the soythe, and it was not long before it wantod lixing agaiii, and the iathersaid, in a pet, "Well, hang it to suit yonrself." Daniel, witli great composnre, huug it in the next tree and retired. The annual report to the department shows that in the last fiscal year 1,825 postoffices have been established and 863 discontinued, making an inorease of 962 over offices established in the previous yoar.
