A few weeks ago two travelers, who were breakfasting ia an inn at Little Courcelles, near Paris, called for a bottle of wine, and the innkceper sent a servant into tíio cellar to fetch it. Aiter waiting a long time for the girl to return with the wine, and as the travelers were now impatknt, the innkeeper bimgelf iiixlo the descent into the collar, bui was not seen again. One of the travelers rose from the breakfat-t table in alarm, and ran down cellar to ascertain what had happcned, and his compauion waited in vain for his reappearauce. ïhere was now only one man in the tuvern, and he was too wise to vanish from the sceno so abruptly as the rest had done. He rau into the street and called in the neighbors. One of these, a physieian, ventured as fax as the door of the cellar, and pushed it open so as to givo egress to the noxious gases imprisoned there. Af ter the cellar liad been partially ventilated the neighbors found on the floor the bodies of the four persons who had dissppeared so mysteriouBly. Three of them were restored to oonsciousness, but the girl, who had led the way, died. On the previous cvening the iniïkeepcr had left a vat of must in the collar, and the earbomc acid gas emitted from the fermenting liquid hal poisoned the air.
