oembor 28 was f299,150,475. Sexaïor Ferry votod for tho Silver bill aud Senator Christiancy against it. ■sMH4 --- urn Bayakd Taylor has been appointed Minister to Jiuilin. A first-rate seleotion ; but, thon, won't the disappointed Bob Ingersoll raiso h 11 about the Presiden t's ears ? " One more uufortunate, itaahly importúnate.'' The Hon. Ilenry Charaberlain, of Th ree üaks, Berrien County, Michigan, wlio has fornially annountied that he luis (vithdrawn frotu the Democrutio party und joined the greenbackers. The contractors have informed the Secretary of the Building Gumiuissioners that tho new Capítol will not be completed beforo September or October; which delay will cheat the Lansing people out of thoir proposed grand Fourth of July celebration. Now that the Silver bill bas gone back to the House Miohigau's new statcsnian (Ellsworth) will have an opportunity to rectify the mistake he made in voting for it : hoping that the Senate would show less hasto and more wisdom. Half right, - and that's more than can be aaid for niany of his associates. Pope Pius IX was a provident man and despito the eucroachments upou the temporalities of the church had laid by a snug littlo sum for a rainy day : - reports beingtrue. The "ready money" f ound in the dead Pontiff 's desk counted up $120,000, and his estáte is estimated at $24,000,000, inostly in the hands of the Rothschilds. Mayor Laxgdon, of Detroit, vetoed tho resolution of tho Common Council providing for the issuo of bonds to the amount of $75,000 for a central market building. He says : "I am opposed to tho issue of bonds for any purpose whatever ; I am opposed to the increase of the public debt : I do not think it is for the interest of the city or any party to do either." hoaded that Mayor. CALIFORNIA divided on the Silver bill, Senator Booth voting for it and Senator Sargeut against it. Also Oregon, Senator Grover voting yes and Senator Mitchell no. Tho Colorado Senators both voted yes, though during the discussion Senator Chaffee disclaimed any great confidence in its being the wonderful panacea its warinest friends proclaimed it. In" the Vatican conclavt on Wednesday, on the third ballot, Cardinal Joachiui Pooci, Grand Chamberlain or Cimerlengo, was elected the successor of Pius IX, and will ascend the papal throno under tho title of Leo XIII. The new Pope was born March 2, 1810, and is classed as a liberal. He is an Italian by birth. Cardinal McCloskey, of New York, did not reach Rome in time to particípate in the election. The advocates of romonetizing silver and uiakiug it a legal tender have the provisions of the Constitution in their favor, - at least so far as all future contracts and trausactions are concernod. The question is one of expediency and wisdom. But tho greenbackers are barred by the Conatitution from putting their wild and visionary schemes into operation. Not a solitary clause of the Constitution can even be tortured into conferring tho power to issue paper tokens or promises and make them legal tenders. PillLurs Acadesiy, at Andover, Mass., which puts in a claim to be the oldest incorporated academy in America, and to have graduated 9,000 boys, is arranging to celébrate its centennial June ü and G. Alexander McKenzie, of the class of '55, is named as orator of the occasion, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, of '25j as poot. Great effort is being made to gather in all tho loyal sons from far and near, with a viow to having a good time, and also looking to centennial offerings to relieve the academy of a burden of debt and to promote improvemonts demanded by the times. Is IT possible that those Detnocrats who advocate a new issue of greenbacks, an issue sufficiently largo to take up the entire bonded debt of the Government, have over heard of those Democratie fathers and leaders, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, Van Buren, Benton, Wright, Douglas, strict constructiouists all, who did n't believe that an unlimited shinplaster currency was a public blessing, or that Congress had a right to make promises to pay - and irredeemable promises at that - a legal tender. Those modern greenback Democrats are running after modern lights and listening to modern apostles who know nothing of the Democratie record or of tho Constitution, and less of finance and financial principies than either, - absurd as the proposition may seem. If A suooesïion from a " country cousin " is in order, we venture one to the Detroit people aud the committee having in charge the location of grounds for the comiDg State Fair and for a permanent exposition, etc. Unless grounds can be procured in the heart of the city, so that visitors can walk to and from the grounds, railroad depots, Snd hotels, it looks to us as though the location which would be most accessiblo to the city and the State at large - taking into consideration tho delivery of stock, heavy goods, and passengers, at tho grounds - will be found in the vicinity of tho crossing of Woodward avenue and the several railroads. To grounds and buildings at this point trains could be run at frequent in torvals from both the Central and Southern depots, while street cars would also convey passengers directly to the grounds. Special trains could also come in on tho roads from the North, South, and West, and land passengers, with warea tor exhibition, directly at or near the grounds. We notice in the list of locaiities naraed by the committoe in charge none which seems to combine souiany ways of access.
