We invite the attention of officials, saloonkeepers, and the public generally to Sec. 9, of Act No.190 of the session laws of 1877, which is as follows : " Sec. 9. It shall be unlawf ui for any porsou to sell, barter, orgive away any spirituous, vinous or malt liquors, on the day of any election held withiu this State, under the constitution or laws thereof ; and it shall be the duty of all mayora of cities, presidents of villages, and supervisors of townships, within üve days previous to the days of election as aforesaid, to issue a proclamation, warning the inhabitants of the provisions of this act, and that all violations ot the same wilt subject the offender to prompt and speedy pumshment, and requirmg sheriffs, marshals, constables, and pólice ofiicers to close all houses or places found violating the provisions of this act, and to report forthwith all violations of this act, to the prosecuting attorney and raayor, president or supervisors aforesaid, and whose duty it shall be to immediately prosecute such violators of this act. Any peraon who shall viólate any of the provisious of this soctiou, shall be deemed guilty of a inisdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fino of not less than twenty-ftvo dollars, nor more than one hundred dollars, and costs of prosecutions and on failure to pay such fine and costs, shall be imprisoned in the county ja.il not less thau ten days, nor more than ninety days, or both such fine and imprisonment, m the discretion of the court." The samo act makes it a penal ofïeuse for candidates or their friends to give or cause to be giveu auy elector, at any time either before or during an election, any meat, drink, or refreshment, or any mouey or ticket to enablo such voter to procure refreshmeut. Pending an election hospitality is hereafter i dangerous virtue, for all such giviag or causing to be giveu is by the terms of sec. 5 of the luw above quoted dedared to be a " corrupt practice," punishable with heavy fine.
