A curious description lias been given of the decreaso of the population of tho islaud of Sfc. Helena, memorable in all history as tlie aceña of the last years of Napoleon, lts industries hnve becu alinost ruiued by the opening of the Suez cannl, which has diverted most Indiagoiue vessels frern its shores, and the employment of steam condensers for water on sailing vessels, saving theni from t)io neeessity of culliug at the island for fresh supplies of water. Onefourth of the populutiou has emigrated, nnd now theio are only 2.G84 males, of whom 1,154 are children, left on the island. The revenue, chiefly derived from customs duties, ia but very little more tlian 80,000, and bufc little more tlian 25,000 is spent on all tlio public estaWibliments of the island. The people are asking for a grant of money from Eugland, but they aro urged to have reoourse to improved agriculture and attompt the growth of ñne species of toDiici'o, of the cinchona plant or the oil-yieldiug rose, all of which are, it is said, ndápted to the climate and soil.
