The. following details of tlic i sassinaiion of the Earl of Lcitrim, his clerk and driver, has been telegraphed from Dublin. The Earl of Leitrim left his residence at Milford shortly bef ore 8 o'clock ycsterday moruing, accompanied by liis clerk, nuil vas driving on an outside car to Derry to meet his solicitor. He always carried arms. It is supposed the assassinsconcealed themselves behind a low embankment between the road and plantation, and tiiat, having first shot the Earl of Leitrim, they shot the clerk and driver, f o there roight be HO witnesses. His Lordship's valet was driving about a mile behind, and, on comiDg up, found his mastcr and the clerk lying dead on the road. Life was still in the driver. The assassins meanwhile escapcd in a boat aerof s Mulroy bay The valet drovo back to Milford and alarmed the pólice, who, coming to the place, found the driver still alive, bat unconseioHS. He died shortly af ter wards. There is no doubt that the murder was agrarian. Tho relations between the Earl of Leitrim and his tenants were unfrieudly. His Lordship was kiud and liberal to the poor, but was yery particular and exaoting in his dealings with his tenantry, visiticg with unsparing severity the slightest infractiou of the rules of the estáte. The Kibbon Society have a strong hold upoii the county, ownig in a great measure to his hnrshncss. He had an iroii will which disregarded alike appeals or menances, and he possessed extraordinary courage aud perseverance in the pursuifc of his purposes. The Londen Times, in an editorial on the nssassination, iys it is no exaggeratiou to say that the news of the murder of the Earl ef Leitrim, which caused a profound sensation in the House of Commons when confirmed by the Irish Secretary, has stmck this covintry with as much pain and amazement as an unprovoked declaration of war.
