Much amusement was occasioued by the exhibition of a talking instrument before the French Academy of Sciences. The pereon in charge of the machine said to it in a, loud voice, and with a marked English accent, " Le phonographc presente fes compliment a V 'Academie des iĆ¼oicncea." The repetition of the words by the instrument, preserving the accent, but at a falsetto pitch, brought great applause. The Academiciaus buret into uuren traiued laughtcr, as the machino repeated, after the operator, the question and answer, " Mossieu phonographr., parlez voun Francais f " Oui, Mossieu." One of the members, M. Du Moncel then, to satisfy himself that thcre was no imposition.talked to the plionograph and rceeived back liiswords, " L' 'Acadarnie remerde M. Udison de son interessante communication." The excitemont and mirth was so greafc that a long time elapsed before the Academy could settle itself and go on with the Communications of tkc cvening.
