- Xwo of our leading greonbackers wore disputing bb to who was the tirst grnenbacker, whau Geo. A. Knickerbocker, wilh a good deal of shrewdness, iuformed these gentlemen tbat it was Micawber. The groenbackers happenod not to hare heard of Mr. Micawber wLen " Knick" informed theni that he was the chap who gave a new note tbr an olfl ons overdue, and thereupon claimed ho had that trouble off his miad. Jonesville Ind. The National-Greenback or üreenback-National party in this State seems to be suffering froin a supeifluity ot leaders. Field and Hoyt havo both issui,-d calis for a convention, the foriner as chairmaa of the National State Comirittee, and the latter by virtue of a rouiuiission froin Brick Pomeroy, or some equally good source. Brick has denouuced Moses as a traitor, and the organs of the party are trying to read Biick out. - Free Preta. Many a man wbo would not take a false oath, belief in which should lead to the hanging of accused but innocent persons, would be ready enough to teil any nuraber of lies against men whom his party should wish to turn out of power. Their party feelings would wake them 8 wilt witnesses, and they would expect to be protected by their party against the psins and penalties of perjury, and they would be so protectod, to the extent of that party's power. Nor would they admit that they had been guilty of a serious moral offense, in perjuring theraselves for their party's benefit. Party has a morality of its own, and it is neither a stiff-necked nor a strait-laced morality ; and it excusos, and even approves, of msny things that are done politically, which all men would condemn were they to be dono personally. - Boston TraveUer. The platform of the Indiana Nationals contains many inconsistencies and iibsunhties, but none more inconsistent than that clauso which condemns the building of a cnstly and niagnificent State House in Indianapolis. Why, the Communists and Socialists and Greenbackers and odds and ends who make up tbe National party are eternally howliug for a liberal system of public iuiproveuients, that will employ tbe idlo laborers of the country - just the thing which the building of the new State House will do. It is to be feared tht tbe National who wrote that resolution ha private and personal reasons for disap)roving of the award made to the successful architect. - Chicago Tribune. Secretary Sherman necd not be so anxious about having an attorney to represent him before the Potter comuiittee. He will have ampie time to put in his düfense before the high court of impeachment, and there is no special reason why he should get a preliminar)- hearing in the congressional grand jury. If they don't indict him, no deictisü is needed, and if they do, he will have a fair chance when bis case comes up for trial. - St. Ijuis Itepublican. The Vermont platform is rather a feeble aftnir. Perhaps the members feit so sure of carryiug tue State that they thought it made nodifferonce what they declared or omitted to declare. This very feeling of safety, on the contrary, ought to have induce! them to make a bold and 6trong onunciation of something substuntial as a body of doctrine. The Termcnt Eepublicans might have struck the keynote of an aspiring march for their party ; but if there was any certain sound it has died away among the Green Mountaina. - N. T. Etening Post. Tbe devotion of Senator Conkling to his favorites in tbe New York Custom House is only surpassed by his silence upon questions of national importance. No custom house was ever so faithfully
