A good story is told of a Yennont exiTuclge and ex-member of Congress. The latter held conrt in Essex county, when a long-standing case, in which an especially sharp lawyer had been engaged. was heard. Tho Judge ruled the law points against the lawyer in question, and he lost the case. After tea, the counsellor, who was staying at the same inn in Guildhall with the Judge, approached the latter and invited him to take a drive, and the Judge accepted. A few minutes behind a good trotter took them over the line into New Hampshire, when the attorney turned to his conipanion and said : " Judge, I presume, now we are in New Hfampshire, we are peers ?" The court assented. "Well," rejoined the lawyer, "yon blank old fooi, how carne yu to decide that case against me?" And, expending a part of his temper upon the innocent anima) that drew the carriage, he sped away from the line of Vermont, increasing his vituperation with the distance, from the Jucge's jurisdiction. Finally, exhausted, he turned his horse and drove baek to Guildhall. As the horae's hoofs sounded on tho bridge, which brought the riders again in the Green Mountain State, the serene lawyer gracefully raised his hat and said : " Jndge, we have had a very plensant ride together. I am greatly obliged for your company, and hope on some future occasion to have the honor of a drive with you again."
