Neptune, the most remoto of the planets of tlio solar syi-tem, is abrut 2,700,000,000 mrlfs trom the bub. It is supposed that Mercury has mouotains higher than the Himalayas, and volcanot'B iu a Ktate of ucüvity. Out of all the myiiad ligbts iu the heavecs, the oarth is only visible to tho Moon, Mars, Mereury aud Venus. The eaith is 749 times smaller thnn S.ituro, and its mean distance from us is over 91,000,000 miles. Uranus can never Eee us at all, as it is 1.753,000,000 miles from the sun. The ttmpcraturc in Mereury is supposed to be seven times botter than our torrid zone; therefore if it is inhabited it must be by a people xery dilïerently constituted from ourselves. It is believed that Venus has an atmosphere much like ours, and mounfciin peaks fivo or six times higher than the Teneriffe, their sides bright uith flowers, and birds of brüliant plumage. Tho Moon nevcr leaves our globe; tliertfore it is called our satcllite. Though to us :t appeara larger than the stars, it is really ïnuoh smaller than any of them, but much nearer to us. Astronoiuers iiuve calculatod that the monntains and t xtinct volcanoes in the Moon are higher than auy on our carth. If there w!re i.ny one on tho Moon to see it, the earth woulrl nppear to them a mngniííc.íiiL buil. Tho planeta amd sun would move behind itin brilliantsiiccession. Our globe appears to Mars as the morning and evt'niug star.
