The jail statistics for 1877, as eoiiipiled in tho office of the Secrotary of State and recontly issued, coutaiiis many important and interesting statements in relation to the numbor of petty crimes couunitted in the sevoral oounties in Michigan, the cost of maiutaiuing jails and prisons, and the influence of education in the initigition of crime. The total numbor of prisonera in the jails at the beginning of 1877 was 270 against 244 in 1876. The number received during the year was 6751, or 289 loss thau in 1876. The number of males received during the year was 6,233, of which number 317 were uuder 18 years of age. The number of males eharged with high oiimes was 1,696, againgt 1,619 in 1876. The number of females charged i with high crimes was 115, against 63 in 1876. Of the total number ehargod with high crimes 67 were uuder 18 years of age. In 1876 there were 87 juveniles. Tho number of females charged with minor offenses was 370, being 88 loss than in 1876. Of tho total numbor cuarged with miuor offenses, '269 wore under 18 years of age, being ó4 less than in 1876. The total number of witnesses coufined iu the jails during 1877 was 30, and the number of debtors 70. Of the total number confined in the jails in 1877, 380 were sent to the State Prison, 684 to the Detroit House of Correction, and 77 to the State Reform School. There were 32 prisoners escaped and 350 remainod in the jails at the close of the year. Of the total prisouers confined 456, or 8 per cent., oould not read, and 675, or 10 per cent., were unable to write, The total cost of niaintaining the jails was $82,290.68 ; and tho total expense of arresting and detaining priaoners was $102,406.13. In 1876 the cost of maiutaiuing jails was (71,842.36, and the cost of arresting and detaining ! prisouers was $104,947.25. The expense, tberefore, of niaintaining prisouers in 1877 was about 11 percent, greater 'hüii iu 1876, altbough tbe number was roducod ; but the expenses of arrosting and detaining prisoners wore about 2 1-2 per cent.
