As the proposod pubiisher of a uew paper iii tliis city has for uearly two months wiilely advertised his belief iu the " uon-existence of a sound Democratie paper at the county seat," and continually " shoots off his mouth " to the sama effect, we deern it a privilege as well as a dnty to copy the followiug paragraph from the Frcc Press of June Ü8, a paper not unkiu)-n to the Deniocracy of thia city and county, and wliose opinión is certainly worth as much as is that of the aspiring fledgeling who has uudertaken the job of running the Democratie politics of this county ; undertook it, in fact, before lie had a residence here or any known politics : " It is sincerely to be hoped that the rumor of au impendiug chauge iu the proprietorsbJp of the Auu Arbor Argus has uu toundutiou. The Democracy of Washtenaw County cannot afford to have any chauge, and they ought not to permit it. Mr. E. B. Pond has been for many years one of the most clear-headed, consistent and unwavering advocates iu Michigan of sound Democratie principies, aud nothing but ïll-healtu or uld age - which is a good muny yoars oflf in his caao-ahould be accepted as au excuse tor his retiring froui the good work in which he is engaged. We have nothing to aay in disparagement of any enterprisiug individual who is desirous of eutering upon a similar work, but the good people of Washtenaw will subject thomselves to sevore criticism if they permit the invpression to go abroad that they are mcapable of appreciating the sterling woith of a man like E. B. l'ond, and of sucli a paper as he has made the Aeous." The following item from the Lansing Republican of July 2 is pertinent to the issue, and is commeuded to our readers as the view of a disiuterested outsider who has had special opportuuity for w eighiug the " Colouel " : " Notobieiy i, Beality."- Uuder tliis heading the Ann Arbor Aboüs of June 21 published as a coinmunicatiou a caustic sketch of a proraiuent politician in that city. Xo man was mentioued, but Senator J. L. Burleigh put the coat on, and was so augry at the close Ut of the gannent that it is repurted he will forthwith start another democratie uewspaper at Aun Arbor. A'ow Mr. l'ond, editor oí the Akous, is au able, honest, iudustrious man, strong iu his convictions, and reasouably in nis comroversies, eujoymg the sincere respect ot all men in. the State oi all pohtical partiea who are persoually acquaiuted with him. It would seem to be an up-hill j.jb for another paper to uproot the Aeous iu that rield. Mr. Fond was íonnerly u.seful es a State Senator, which is more than can be said oi the oue who took uuibrage at the communicatiou relerred tü. Mr. Burleigh füed a seat in the State Senate iu 1S77, but did not " fill the bill " so well as niany of his associates and predeuessors ; in fact, lie was rather an obstacle, owiug either to ignorance or levity, ia the way of good legislatiou, uotwithstaudiug his genial uiannert-. We advite Senator Burleigh to irrite a suiarfer commuuicatton, or get 011e written, thau the Aequs published, and have it appear m the columns ot that paper, if possible, or in the Courier or Register ; then be will be aheud, and it won't uoüt him near eo much mouey or perplexity as to start a paper of his own. It is uot ofteu that we trouble the public with matters ot a personal nature, and for yeara nu have sacrificed personal feelings and peisonal mterests for the good of the party mui the preservatiou of harmony, but -the provocation in this case we are coufident wurimits a departiire trom the rule whinh has gover ned our conduct.
