That very singular body of persons, commonly known as Shakers - their proper name is the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing - is said to have materially increased since 1870, and to nurnber now nearly 12,000. This is rematkable, inasmucli as, believing and rigidly adhering to celibacy, they can recruit their ranks only by external aceretion. Tliey liavo eighteen separate settlements (the sect is eutirely conflned to the United States), of which. there are 2 in Maine, 2 in New Hampshire, 4 iu Massachusetts, 1 in Ooanecticut, 3 in New York, 4 iu Ohio, and 2 in Kentucky.
