-The Department of Literature, Science, and the Artï opened on Wednesday. Up to yesterday noon 209 candidato tor admission had registered their applicatlons with the President. The exammatioiis have not been 80 far completed as to enable us to say how many have passert the ordeal. But we are able to say that there will be a handsome iucrease over last year's " fresh." In the other departmeutB the uumbers registered are largely in advnnce of corresponding date of lost year, benig yesterday uoon ns follows : In Department o Medicine and Surgery, 106 ; in Law Department, 10() ; in Homeopathie Medical College, 13; in College of Dental Surgery, 10; in School of Pharmncy, 22. - Those who desire to attend the Histoncal Lectures of Professor Arïams may be glad to know that the flrat lecture of his course will be given on Tuesday, üct. 1, at i p. m. o'clock in Room A, University Hall. His course, open to the public this year, is ou " The Political History of Englaud nee the Downfall of Napoleon ;" and his introductory lecture will be on "The Financial Distress and Recovery of Kngland at tbe close of the Napoleouic Wars." -Prof. Watson brought down auother planet ou Sunday night. Kintner, of '70, has won the positiou of Third Aesistant Examiner in the Patent Office, Washington, on a competitivo examination. - Dr. Douglas has noticed nis chancery suit against the Regenta for the October term of the Circuit Court. - A. H. Pattengill, formerly assistant professor in Ureek, arrived home from Europe ou Tuesday, accompanied by his wife.
