At a special meeting of the Commoii Council held on Mouday eveniug last, the WaterWorks Committee reported agoiust the propositiou of 8. L. Wiley & Co., of Boston (the Hauchett iiropositiou revised). Their objectioos were various : charter term too long ; 575 a hydraut, or $4,500 a year too inuch ; aud tlie proposed exemptiou from taxation not to be entertaiued. The Committee thought that the city ought not to pay over f2,500, and that proposition, plan, and system should first be subinitteil to the taxpayers. Messrs. Gott, Besmier, and Tremain wero appointed a Committee on Water Supply, with instruotions to keep the city advised from time to time ahould anythiug "turn up." The city needs water works, aud the question is will the city build and own them or charter a Corporation ? We favor the latter plan. As to the number of hydrants and the price to be paid by the city for them, much will reasonably depend on the necessary coet of the works. If works eau be built for $75,000 or Ï100.000 we incline to the opinión that the city should not bo called upon to pay $4,500 a year for its supply for fire aud public purposes. But if the works - such works as the city needs and shouli have- will coat $150,000 or 200,000, it would be better for the city to contract to pay aunually $4,500 than to go without water or build works on its owu account. As to leugth of charter, no capitalista eau probably be found who will accept a charter running less than 25 years. At the same meeting a resolution was adopted instructing the City Attorney to notify the Gas Compauy of the terminatiou of their contract with the city In December next, and Aid. Bower, Bbsimer, McDonald, Woodruff, and Handy were appointed a committee to procure a mor advautageoua contract.
