Egypt is as dependont for her very existence on the waters of the Nile us ever she was. There is bot o acre of tilled land but is fertilizad direetly from the river. The annual riso, eauseil by the equittorinl rains, hegins in June and attaia-t its greatest height in the latter part of September. The country is irrigated by 846 canals, raeasnring in all 8,400 miles, of which 112 have been constracted duriog the present rcign. The lurge canals which issue directly from rivcr tap it at a higher elevation than the district they are ifitènded to irrígate, and from them issiu smaller canals which water still lover and more remóte sections.- National liepository for November.
