The new anti.septic method of 1 gery which has but recenèly been 1 liuced iuto thi.s country lias been twice successfully (ried at the Alexian Brothers' Hospital, Chicago, during the past two weeks. In each ca.se a leg wa.s amputated, nul the patiënt rapidly recovered, experiencing no pain whatever from the use of the surgical instrumenta, j Tho method of opcration is as follows: Tho surf ace of the limb to be amputated is flrst sponged with a solution of one part carbolic acid to forty of water, into the wound. Tliis makes the operation perfectly painless, and does away with the necesaity for using chloroform or ether. The wound is then dressed with oiled silk, saturated with Bnlphate of lead, whieh indico tes the presenoe of sulphate of hydrogen by turning black, and shows whether the wound is suppuraHiig. Six layera of medieated gauze aré tlion placed over the wound, and the wholo is covered witli Mackintosh cloth.
