The principal witnes668 examined were Mr. Tilden, Col. Pelton, Mantón Marble, Smith M. Weed and Edward Cooper. The investigation pretty thoroughly established that the Returning Boards of the three disputed Southern States were in the market and Mr. Tilden could have had thein by paying their price ; also, that all the witneases except Mr. Tilden were aware of this fact at the time, and sorne of them actually took the matter of purchase into serious eonsideration. So far as Mr. Tilden is concerned, however, the witnesses all concur that the momeni his attention was called to the negotiations for the ransoming of the electora votes which the thieves had in their possession, he indignantly stamped his foot upon the whole business. That is tho sum of the testimony. " I woulc scorn and condemn my righteoua title,' said Mr. Tilden to his examiners, " i the Democratie party had secured my seat by fraud." General Hunton, chairman of the sub oomroittee, at the conclusión of Mr. Til den's testimony: " Well, as the Return ing Board were for salo, perhaps it i fair to conclude that the successful party were the purchasers."
