An Indian carnea tlie dead body of his sister to the top of a hill at Rosebud, Neb., and stationed hiinself by it with a rifle in his hands, intending to kiJ] the first white man who came within range, so that a white spirit might accompany her to the happy huntinggronnds. He stood there six liours, flritig occasional but harmless shots at distant persons. Then a white man who had lived many years among the Indians, and whose wife was a squaw, walked unsuspectingly that way. ïhe Indian shot him in the brea&t, and was Batisfied. But the wounded man recovered, and accepted thirteen horsea, forty blankets, and an apology in settlement. The successful man has faith in his profession, and loves the task it imposes. Aye more, he performs those duties with a strong heart and a willing hand.
