The St. Gothard timuel is now the iongest tunnel in the world, the length, bored f rom both sidea, reaohing a total of 13,481 yards - twenty-three yards longer than the Mont Cenis. Very I nearly 3,000 yards still remain to be excavated. Most of the laborers employed in the galleries are Italians. They work night and day in shifts of eight hours eaohj and their work is described as being terricly severe. The heat is so great that they can wear do clothes whatever. Tliey return to the mouth of the tunnel stroanring with perspiration, their faces are yellow and ghastly, they cannotbear the light of the sim, they walk with best Btewdders, and stagger as if carrying burdens too heavy for their strength. They are nevertheless said to be cheerful, and even merry. They support their hard lot without repining, and save money.
