Thisem inent soholar and roformef was bom in the town where ha dieJ, December 8 1811, and was, therefore, in hisü8th year. The son of a shoeuiaker, ha received a oomnion school ednoation and, at the ago of 16, was apprenticed to a Wokstuith. His first impotus to philologioal studies was his deairo to road tho acriptures in the origina!, and he soon ruastered gev eral languages. He edited a paper forawhilo, and delivered lectures on temperance and sluvery.
