It will be seenthattheincrease in 1878 was rnucli less than in 1877 - an evidence that idle hands have f ound somethingto do, for idleness breeds lawless men. In 1876 there were 40 prosecutions for murder; 15 were acquitted, 8 convicted of murder in the second degree, Á of inansUuigliter, :; of niiuder,, 1 died bef ore trial, and 12 cases were pending at the close of the year. In 1877 there were 28 prosecutions; S resulting in acquittal, : in convictions for mmder in the second degree, r of murder, ■" of mansaughter, I judged insane, and 7 were pending at the close of the year. During the three years there were 11 1 prosecutions and but 11 couviotions for murder in the lirst degree.
