Once upon a time a little leaf was heard to sigh and cry, as leaves ol'ten do when a gentío wind is about. And Ihe twig said : "What is the matter, little leaf?" And the leaf said, "The wind just told me that one day he would pull me off and throw rae down to die on the ground !" Tlie twig told it to the branch 011 which it grew, and the branch told it to the tree. And when the tree heard it, it rustled all over, and sent word back to the leaf, "'Do not be afraid; hold on tightly, and you shall not go nntil you want to." hoofs ttaero little twig ft] :self, and the little leaC daneed ii] and own merrily, as if nothing could ever ut it off. And so it grew, all summer long, Uil October. And when the brightdays of utumn came, the little leaf saw all the eaves around becoming very beautiful. ome were yellow, and some scarlet, nd some strlped with botb colors. 'hen it asked the tree what it meant? And the tree said, "All these leaves re getting ready to ily away, and they leve put on tliese beautiful colors beause of joy." Then the little leaf an to want to go, and grew very eautiful in thinking of it, and wlien ; was very gay in color, it saw tliat ie branches of the tree had no color n them, and so the leaf said, '"Oh, ranches ! why are you lead-color and we golden ?" "We must keep on our work-clothes, or our life is not done; but your lothes are for holiday, because your asks are over." Just then a little pull' f wind came, and the leaf let go withut thinking of it, and the wind took t up, and turned it over and over, and whirled it like a spark of flre in the ir, and thenit feil gently down under !ie edge of the fence among hundreds f leaves, and feil into a dream, and ever waked up to teil what it ed about !-
