In pursuance of the joint resolution öi CongreBS, requiring the Secretary of War to con yene a board of officers of the engineer orps to inquire into and report whether for railroad purpose the Detroit River can be advantageooBly bridged or tunnelled at the city of Detroit or within one mile above or below that city, the Secretary ot War has designated the following board: Lient. Col. W.F. Raynolds, Lieut. Col. Nathaniel Niohles, Maj. O. V. Poe, Major D. C. Houston and Major J. M. Wilson The board will convene at Detroit nponthe cali of the senior officer and will ttakeitB repurt and recommendation to the efcief engineer before the lat of December neit. The Rev. Paul's chnrch Wednesday with imposing ceremomes and in the presence of many citizens and distinguished visitors, The sermón was preached by Kt. Rev. Robert H. Clarkson, D. L)., LL. D., Bishop of Nebraska. President Hayes and party arrived by the steamer Northwest Thursday morning and were met at Grosse Isle by Mayor Langdon and the reception committee. After a formal reception at ex-Gov. Baldwin s the party was escorted through the principal Btreets to the fair grounds, where the President made a brief addrcss. They then took an exsursien on the river and in the evening gave a public reception in the City Hall. There was a large crowd present, and many of the business blocks were brilliantly illuminated. An aged colored barber named Binga was bii-ned by his olothes taking fire Friday morning and died in a few minutes. Félix Meier's astronoinical clock goes to Chicago for a two month's exhibition. President Hayes and party left by the Canada Southern railway at 7.50 Saturday morning. The party was furnished with a special car by the Railway officials, and División superintendent M. D.Woodford and General Passenger Agent Frank E. Snow acoompanied the distinguinhed travelers as far as Toledo. When the train reaohed the depot at Toledo an immense crowd of people was fonnd assembied, and the President was loudly ches red as he lef t the carR. The party left immediately for Fremont, where they remained until Tuesday when they started for Kansas. Wm. Leisch of 290 Antoine street has been srrested ïor counterfeiting silver coin. A set of eounterfeiting implementa were found on his premises. Gorernor Bishop, of Ohio, and other offi oíala f rom that látate visited Detroit and were given an impromptu reception on Monday. The Scientific Association has made arrangements with the ïoung Men'a Christian Association by which the coming winter seaaon of leoturen will begin in the hall of the latter on altérnate Wednesday evenings. The season will open October 15 with a Jecture by Prof. Alexander Winchell of the State University on "Man in the Light of Geology."
