E. E. Lucas, Ex-Alderman, Dies At 68

Cerebral Hemorrhage Blamed For Death Of Civic Leader

Edward E. (Ed) Lucas, former city council president and one of Ann Arbor’s most prominent civic leaders, died suddenly early today at his residence, 1516 Linwood Ave. He was 68 years old.
Mr. Lucas, who was quotation and information director at Eberbach & Son Co., had worked as usual Saturday. He had complained of a recurrent pain in his leg yesterday and had seen a physician, but apparently was in good health. He was stricken shortly after midnight. A physician who was summoned attributed death to a cerebral hemorrhage.
A life-long resident of Ann Arbor, Mr. Lucas served on the council as a third ward alderman from 1920 to 1933 and as council president the following two years, 1933-35.
On Charter Commission
In 1939 Mr. Lucas was appointed to the charter study revision committee, serving as its chairman for three years. From 1926 to 1929 he was a member of the board of appeals, and from 1935 to 1938 he was on fire commission. Two weeks ago he was named as the chemical expert on the city’s new fumigation board.
Mr. Lucas had been with Eberbach & Son, manufacturers of scientific apparatus and instruments and chemical and laboratory supply dealers, continuously since 1919.
He originally had gone to work for the company as a stockman in 1895 but three years later joined the staff of the University chemistry department, being an assistant to the director of the chemistry laboratory. After 21 years he returned to Eberbach & Son’s sales department. He had been quotation and information director since 1941.
Was Air Raid Warden
During the war he was a third ward air raid warden.
Mr. Lucas was born in Ann Arbor June 26, 1878, a son of John and Elizabeth Wagner Lucas. On Dec. 31, 1900, he was married to Augusta Reetz of Ann Arbor, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Hugh Bowles and two brothers, Louis and Conrad Lucas, all of Ann Arbor.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Muehlig chapel, Rev. Theodore Schmale officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery. Friends may call at the Muehlig chapel.
