Washtenaw Circuit Judge Melinda Morris on Friday ordered a 40-year-old Ann Arbor man to serve two consecutive prison terms of 1 to 20 years for selling cocaine. She imposed the sentences on^O. Herbert FJlis Jr. of 1805 Pauline St., who asked to be placed under Probation Department supervision for life. His request was backed in courtroom statements by his father, 0. Herbert Ellis Sr., and defense attorney David A. Woelkers. The judge said requests for life probation were made in letters she has received from “a large number of letters from people in all walks of life.” However, Morris added: “You need to be punished swiftly and appropriately. Life probation in your case does not serve that purpose... In your field, of acting, there are other people who have served prison terms and been able to come out and perform well.” Ellis has toured with the National Shakespeare Company.
