Krasny New Deputy Police Chief

Capt. Walter E. Krasny, a 23-year veteran with the Ann Arbor Police Department, was today named deputy chief and second in command of the department.

Police Chief Rolland J. Gainsley announced the promotion of Krasny, 44, to the new post.

The position of deputy chief has been vacant in the local department since 1960 when then-deputy chief Gainsley was appointed chief.

The captain's post, which Krasny vacates to assume his new duties, has not been filled.

Deputy Chief Krasny, a Brighton native, began his duties as a patrolman with the Ann Arbor Police Department

in 1939 and was made a detective in 1946. He was promoted to sergeant in 1948 and in 1951 was raised to the rank of uniformed lieutenant.

In 1960 Krasny was appointed captain of the uniformed division and has served in that capacity since.

In his new post Deputy Chief Krasny will be in direct charge of 65 uniformed personnel in addition to supervisory control over six detectives. He will be in charge of the entire department in Chief Gainsley’s absence.

The new deputy chief is married and the father of six children. He lives with his family at 1230 Woodlawn Ave.
