Kidnapped Officer To Identify Body Of Prison Escapee

One of Pair Who Took Stauch's Gun and Car Killed In Detroit

Police Chief Sherman H. Mortenson and patrolman George Stauch left this morning for Detroit to identify the body of Marion Buczynski, 25, one of a pair of escaped convicts who kidnapped Stauch the morning of June 16, utilizing his uniform, car and gun to effect their escape to Detroit.

Buczynski was killed by Inspector John O. Whitman in a Grand River Ave. bar as he attempted robbery. He had been identified in three Detroit holdups since he and Nelson King, 28, escaped from a Southern Michigan maintenance detail at the newly established Cassidy Lake honor camp, for Michigan prisoners the morning they kidnapped Stauch.

Whitman, who was off duty at the time, heard the bartender ask Buczynski not to shoot, as the escaped convict threatened him with a guy. The officer shot once in the bar and then followed the wounded stick-up man into the street where he shot twice more. Buczynski was carrying Stauch's gun, which was empty, despite the fact that twelve bullets had been taken from Stauch at the time of his abduction.

The two escapees had both been serving terms on charges of robbery armed.
