Herman Oelke, Supervisor Of York, Dies

Had Served On County Board Since 1933; Operated Thresher

MILAN—L. Herman Oelke, 61, supervisor of York township since 1933, and operator of a grain threshing machine in the southern part of Washtenaw county for 38 years, died suddenly last night at his home, 255 Hurd St. Coronary thrombosis was believed to be the cause of death.

Earlier in the evening Mr. Oelke had held a meeting in his home with the York township board to discuss general business affairs of the township, including the official acceptance of the township tax roll. During recent months he had been active in the work of the road and drain committees of the Washtenaw County Board of Supervisors.

Mr. Oelke was born April 11, 1887, in Augusta township, a son of Gottlieb and Henrietta Oelke, and was married on Sept. 4, 1907 to Neva Hamilton. They moved from their farm home to Milan in 1908. His first political office came with his election as treasurer of York township in 1931. He served for two years until his election as supervisor.

Funeral To Be Monday

Surviving are his wife, a son, Donald, a daughter, Mrs. Winifred Cook, and a sister, Mrs. Harry Wanty, all of Milan; a brother, Albert of Willis; and six grandchildren, one of whom, Norman Lee Oelke, is a private in the United States Army, stationed in Denver. Colo.

Mr. Oelke was a member of the Wolverine Lodge, IOOF.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Stevens & Bush Funeral Home with Rev. William A. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Marble Park Cemetery. Members of the Washtenaw County Board of Supervisors will be honorary pall bearers.

Friends may call at the residence until 10 o’clock Monday morning.

SUPERVISOR OELKE PRAISED BY ROAD COMMISSION

The Board of County Road Commissioners at its monthly meeting this morning passed a resolution expressing sympathy to the family of Herman Oelke, York township supervisor who died last night, and noting his support in furthering the county’s road program during his 15 years as a supervisor.
