Washtenong To Build Structure At Cost Of Nearly $500,000

A 1,035-crypt mausoleum is to be built in Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor township.
The announcement was made today by Roy Hatton, president and owner of Washtenong, who detailed aspects of the structure which he said will cost “close to half a million dollar.”
Construction is slated to begin by March 15, with completion on the first unit of crypts set for six months later.
Two wings containing more than 300 crypts each are to be erected at either side of the building, while a third wing containing another 1,000 crypts each are to be erected at either side of the building, while a third wing containing another 1,000 crypts is also part of the plan for total development of the mausoleum, giving it a total coast of about a million dollars.
The additions are planned “to meet the immediate demand,” with the total number of crypts to be built dependent upon the response, Hatton said.
The one-level building, which is to be built along Chapel Dr. within Washtenong Memorial Mausoleum, and its grounds will cover five acres, featuring an artificial lake and appropriate landscaping.
With two north-south wings added, the building will be 220 feel long and 42 feet wide.
Its interior of marble will be divided into five 17-foot-wide corridors and lined with crypts, six high, on either side of each corridor. The corridors will open onto a 220-foot-long gallery where furnishings for visitors will be provided.
The building will have a larger reception area where a tower for organ equipment will be located, a reception office and main offices elsewhere in the structure.
The mausoleum is to be erected by the Mausoleum Builders of America, Inc., of Chicago and will be a combination of concrete, steel, granite and marble for appearance and durability, Hatton said.
Outside, a 24x8-foot cross of green glass will be placed in the tower. The cross will be framed by green neon lighting which will make it visible from US-23, giving the impression of a vine climbing skyward, Hatton said. It will be similar to one at Jackson that Hatton built 20 years ago.
Washtenong Memorial Park is located at 3771 Whitmore Lake Rd. in Ann Arbor township.
