Everett J. Soop died at his home on Friday, August 9, 1985. He was born in Belleville, Mich. On April 5, 1901 the son of Malcolm and Joanna Renton Soop. In 1931, he married Elizabeth Schieck who died in 1970. In 1971, he married Jane Morris Schneidewind who survives. He is also survived by his sister, Mabel Soop; a niece, Dorothy Trexler; a grandniece, Susan Trexler Avery; a grandnephew, Joseph Trexler and several great grandnieces and nephews. A brother, Edson Soop preceded him in death in May of this year. Mr. Soop earned his BA degree from Hillsdale College in 1921; a Masters degree from the University of Michigan [in] 1922; and received an honorary LL.D. Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1958. His career in education embraced teaching, administration and staff work in the Men’s Evening High School in Detroit and the Detroit Institute of Technology. In 1935, he joined the University of Michigan Extension Service as field director for the newly founded Detroit regional office, subsequently housed in the Rackham Bldg. in Detroit. In 1948, he became Director for the UofM Extension Service statewide, based in Ann Arbor, and retired from that position in 1971 as Director Emeritus. Through the years, Mr. Soop had received many awards and citations from various educational and gerontological organizations, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. In his retirement years, he was association with many groups engaged in services to the aging and in concerns for retired persons. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, Ann Arbor, with the Rev. Terry N. Smith officiating at 11am Tuesday, August 13. Gifts in memory of Mr. Soop may be directed to the First Congregational Church Endowment Fund, the Ann Arbor Rotary Foundation or to the Washtenaw County Council on Aging.
