Services Wednesday For Aged Local Woman
Mrs. Dora Gates, a member of a pioneer Ann Arbor family and one of the oldest native residents of the city, died early this morning in the private hospital of her son, Dr. Neil A. Gates, where she had made her home for the last five years. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Gates was born Oct. 11, 1845, in a house which stood on the site of the present First National building. Her father, William A. McCormick was the first cabinet maker and undertaken in Washtenaw county.
Finishing high school in 1864, Mrs. Gates wanted to continue her education in the University but that institution did not open its courses to women until several years later. Mrs. Gates' husband, John Gates, preceded her in death.
She is survived by seven children: Dr. William F. Gates of Jackson, Dr. Neil A. Gates, Mrs. J. D. Boylan, Mrs. J. E. Warren, Moore Gates, Miss Bessie Gates and Dr. John L. Gates, all of Ann Arbor; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Muehlig chapel with Rev. Frederick Cowin officiating. Interment will be made in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
