Herald Hoffmann, Red Cross Official, Dies In Hospital
Herald B. Hoffmann, 48, of 1207 Packard St., Home Service director for the Washtenaw chapter of the American Red Cross and immediate past-president of the Ann Arbor Optimist Club, died Sunday afternoon at St. [Joseph] Mercy Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Hoffmann had been especially noted in Ann Arbor for his work with boys through the Optimist Club.
Born April 12, 1907, at Woodbury, Minn., he was a son of Dr. John Jacob and Barbara Bitzer Hoffmann. He was married to Alice Steketee on May 2, 1936, in Chicago. She survives. The couple moved to Ann Arbor in 1946, shortly after Mr. Hoffmann was assigned as Home Service director for the Red Cross here.
Mr. Hoffmann had served with the Red Cross for 16 years.
During World War II he acted as training field director for overseas clubs with the Sixth Service Command.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his father, Dr. John Jacob Hoffmann of Haina, Hawaii; two sons, Dennis and Frederick, both at home; four brothers, J. Wesley of Knoxville, Tenn., Fletcher of Haina, Hawaii, David, a lieutenant colonel with the armed forces in Japan, and Theodore of Detroit; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Staffan-Hildinger Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Grand Rapids.
