Sfc. Harold Rutherford
Serving In Washington
Sfc. Harold E. Rutherford, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd B. Rutherford of 306 Cross St., Ypsilanti is assigned to Battery A of the 75th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Missile Battalion in Washington, D. C.
Supply sergeant of the battery, he entered the Army in July, 1948, and has since served in Korea.
Rutherford is a former employe of the Rutherford Brothers Plating Co. in Ypsilanti. His wife, Reiko, is living in Washington, D. C.
Daniel Maroney
Promoted To Corporal
Daniel R. Maroney, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. Maroney, of Chelsea, recently was promoted to corporal at Ft. Lewis, Wash., where he is a member of the Second Infantry Division.
Combat experience obtained in Korea by the “Indianhead” division is utilized in the training of the unit which recently returned to the U. S.
Cpl. Maroney, a supply clerk in Headquarters Detachment of the division’s 702nd Ordinance Battalion, was last stationed at Ft. Lee, Va.
He was graduated in 1953 from Michigan State University at East Lansing.
Larry A. Esckilsen
Is First Lieutenant
Larry A. Esckilsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence W. Esckilsen of Detroit, formerly of Dexter, has recently been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant in the U. S. Marines.
Lt. Esckilsen is a 1953 graduate of the University’s Law School. He enlisted in The Marines in September, 1953 and reported to the Marine base in Quantico, Va. where he received basic training.
Esckilsen has been stationed in the Far East since October, 1954, and has been doing legal work, such as court-martial defense cases, in Japan and Korea.
He hopes to return to the States in December, via Europe, by means of a special permit. He will receive his discharge then, and plans to resume his studies at the University.
Sgt. Callen Votzke
Gets Achievement Citation
Sgt. Callan L. Votzke has been awarded a Certificate of Achievement for his outstanding performance of duty with the Second Infantry Division during Exercise Apple Jack, recent large-scale Army training maneuver held at the Yakima Firing Center, Wash.
Votzke served as a communications chief with the 12 Field Artillery Battalion during the 10-day exercise that tested latest concepts in the use of a mobile force in low mountainous and desert terrain under realistic combat conditions.
The Second Division soldier is presently engaged in rugged, advanced combat training at Ft. Lewis, Wash. The Indianhead Division, after returning home from Korea in 1954, has maintained itself in a state of readiness to move out effectively in any future military emergency.
Votzke is the son of Mrs. Frank Bower of 77 Ellsworth Rd.
