MABEL VAN KLEEK, FORMER TEACHER, DIES AT 68 YEARS

Retired In 1943 From Ann Arbor High Faculty; Joined Staff In 1916

Mabel R. Van Kleek, who would have been 68 on Jan. 1, died unexpectedly yesterday noon at University hospital where she had been employed in an office since retiring from the teaching staff of Ann Arbor High school three years ago.
Miss Van Kleek joined the Ann Arbor High faculty in 1916 and until her retirement in June, 1943, taught session room, languages, history, mathematics, including algebra and geometry. Before coming to Ann Arbor High school, she taught at Constantine, East Chicago, Ind., and Charlotte.
Herself a graduate of Ann Arbor High school, Miss Van Kleek also received an AB degree from the University in 1899 and a master’s degree here in 1916. She took graduate work at the University in 1925-1926 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Association of University Women, and the Methodist Church.
Miss Van Kleek was born in Flint on Jan. 1, 1879, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Van Kleek. She came to Ann Arbor at the age of 13.
Surviving are a brother, Ernest Van Kleek of Dexter, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Staffan-Hildinger funeral home, with Rev. Leonard A. Parr officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
