DEATH CLAIMS CHRISTIANA ROY OF NEWS STAFF

Illness Of Month Fatal To Well-Known Ann Arbor Reporter

Mrs. Christiana Marie Roy, a member of The Ann Arbor News editorial staff for 17 years, died last night at St. Joseph’s Mercy hospital, where she had been a patient for the past month.

Before her marriage in 1933, Mrs. Roy was Christiana Coon. Her husband, Raymond L. Roy, was a member of The News advertising staff at the time of their marriage. He is now a Washtenaw county deputy sheriff. Their residence is at 1315 Sheehan Ave.

Born In Ann Arbor

Mrs. Roy was born in this city on March 3, 1908. Before her graduation from the Ann Arbor High school in 1925, she was employed by The News as a part-time reporter. Shortly afterward she joined the staff in a full-time capacity and subsequently served this newspaper continuously until the time of her death. For several months she had not been in the best of health and on Jan. 24 her condition became so serious she entered the hospital.

Her first journalistic effort was on the staff of the Optimist, periodical of the High school. She had a natural aptitude for the work and very little instruction was required when she joined The News. During her newspaper career she served in various reportorial and editorial positions and acquired much prestige in business and professional circles. At the time of her death, she was assistant city editor and reported city hall activities, including council proceedings, as well as handling church news and special assignments.

Mother Died In 1933

Mrs. Roy’s mother, Mrs. Emma L. Coon, the wife of James M. Coon, died in 1933. Mr. Coon now resides in Ypsilanti. Two sisters, Mrs. William Teeter of Detroit and Miss Lila Coon of Miami, Fla., survive Mrs. Roy. Mrs. John Biedermann, her grandmother, lives at 714 W. Liberty St.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in the Muehlig chapel, with burial in Bethlehem cemetery. The pallbearers will be Arthur P. Gallagher, Frederick H. W. Jaeger, Ralph N. Byers, Harold C. Baker, Ralph C. Coulter, and George P. McCallum, jr., all members of The Ann Arbor News Staff, long associated with Mrs. Roy in her work at The News.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel tonight, any time tomorrow, and on Wednesday morning.
