CHICAGO (AP)—The hardest working chap on a college football field so far has been the guy running the scoreboard.
Indiana’s Hoosiers, however, lost their pell-mell script and forgot to score last against California. So the Midwest Swami was treed by the Bears for his only miss last week and stands 15-3.
Here’s another go at it:
Michigan 18, Missouri 13—The surprising Wolverines couldn’t buy an extra point against Washington and Missouri’s jolting Joe Moore may put a premium on placement kicking. But Michigan’s Don Moorhead and Glenn Doughty have picked up right where Dennis Brown and Ron Johnson left off.
Notre Dame 20, Michigan State 18—The Spartans’ Bill Triplett is no Mike Phipps, whose uncanny passing riddled the Irish. It should be a slambang game on the ground with Notre Dame goaded after dropping clear out of the Top Twenty.
Purdue 19, Stanford 14—After easy home triumphs over San Jose State and Oregon, Stanford’s Indians run into some fast pitching by fancy-flipping Phipps at Purdue. The Boilermakers don’t seem to be missing Leroy Keyes at all, at all, at all.
Ohio State 35, Washington 13—Woody Hayes’ toughest job is keeping the Buckeyes from regarding themselves as Super Super Scarlet and Grey. Which they are and which Washington’s heavy Huskies will find out. However, this game will be played far from Ohio State’s howling Football Palace where it was thumbs down hapless Texas Christian.
Wisconsin 21, Syracuse 14—Here’s picking the Badgers to end their 22-game winless string. If Wisconsin’s defenses can hold, Wisconsin’s thundering offense led by Alan Thompson could prevail.
Nebraska 14, Minnesota 13—The Gophers meet a rival of equal speed for a change, but the Huskers scored three touchdowns against Southern California in a 31-21 loss and blanked Texas A & M 14-0.
Indiana 21, Colorado 18—The Hoosiers huffed and puffed in a loss to rallying California 17-14 and may be gasping for air in the high country of the Buffaloes. No. 2 Penn State beat Colorado 27-3.
Illinois 19, Iowa State 14—The Illini will try a new quarterback, soph Bob Quinn, and a bolstered passing attack to notch their first victory. Mended John Kaiser is back at split end and with flanker Mike Pickering and halfback Bob Bess should perk the Illini aerial game.
Iowa 30, Arizona 14—Fresh from crushing Washington State with a new school record of 696 yards on offense, the Hawkeyes should easily lassoe Arizona—drubbed 42-17 by Kansas State.
UCLA 35, Northwestern 14—The battered Wildcats, already skinned for 83 points by Notre Dame and Southern California, must dig in against the dead-eyed passing of UCLA’s Dennis Dummit.
