SWAMI PICKS M, USC OVER IRISH

CHICAGO(AP)—Two separate races are spinning on the Big Ten football front.

One is a contest of Russian Roulette against awesome Ohio State. The other is a chase for the Rose Bowl bid denied Ohio State this season.

The Midwest Seer last week had to tear up two tickets in the Rose Bowl Sweepstakes when Iowa and Purdue ran out and blew a maiden event when Illinois faded.

So he stands 24-10 for .706 as the season hits the halfway mark.

Michigan 20, Michigan State 14—Fleet halfback Glenn Doughty and defensive end Phil Seymour are back in good shape. That should add to the effectiveness of the Don Moorhead-Jim Mandich aerial axis which punctured Purdue. It’s a hot neighborhood rivalry, but the Spartans still may be stunned by successive hammerings at Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Ohio State 28, Minnesota 14—Almost tempted to pick an upset of heavily-favored No. 1 Ohio State. If the Gophers are as slow as Coach Murray Warmath claims, Rex Kern’s fantastic faking won’t bother them a bit. But those Buckeye running backs are something else. Also, gifted rover back Jack Tatum can hang it on Minnesota’s ground game.

Southern California 21, Notre Dame 19—The Irish are tabbed a three-point favorite, but third-ranked Southern California has a little too much speed and a pretty good sophomore quarterback, Jimmy Jones. If the Trojans were able to shade Stanford and the Indians’ great gunning Jim Plunkett, they can handle Irish sharpshooter Joe Theismann. Trojan tailback Clarence Davis is 57 yards ahead of O. J. Simpson’s rushing record for the first four games.

Purdue 28, Iowa 21—Good Michigan linebacking harassed Purdue’s great Mike Phipps. The Hawkeyes won’t bother Phipps that much. It remains to be seen whether Iowa is smarting more from its resounding upset by Wisconsin than the Boilermakers from their first setback at Michigan.

Wisconsin 14, Northwestern 13—The Badgers and Wildcats, believe it or not, are fighting for a share of first place in the Big Ten. Wisconsin is sky-high after a 23-game winless skein in a dramatic upset of Iowa, but this is the first Badger road game in five starts. If the wounded Wildcats swing it, give their medical corps a big hand.

Indiana 21, Illinois 7—Coach Johnny Pont has knocked his Hoosiers away from their scrap books. Quarterback Harry Gonso and mates won’t be dawdling against the winless Illini.
