Board To Hear Blacks

An agreement between the Board of Education and the coalition of black parents and students has been made to place the list of demands on the agenda for tonight’s public board meeting.

The four demands will be discussed by trustees during a special briefing session which will be held at 7:30 p.m. before the regular meeting today at Newport Elementary School.

The four demands to be discussed are: —The employment of 12 groundsmen

to assure the safety of all students.

—The creation of a black studies component in the curriculum of all secondary schools.

—Expansion of the counseling staff, option for student selection of counselors, option to change counselors, counselors to have preparation in counseling and human relations, and a program for college and non-college bound students be initiated.

—The school board immediately take steps to identify and serve the needs of non-middle-class white students.

An interim position for the first demand is that a bi-racial group of parents patrol the schools until the 12 groundsmen have been hired.

The black demands evolved from a system-wide boycott of black students which was called for after a series of racial conflicts in the schools last week. The boycott ended Monday.
