Gophers, Iowa Get Ol' Swami's Nod
GOPHERS, IOWA GET OL’ SWAMI’S NOD
By Charles Chamberlain
CHICAGO (AP)—Northwestern sharing the Big Ten lead is proof anything can happen. But it all should undergo a change this week with the Ol’ Swami, 26-13 for the season, sticking his neck out with these forecasts:
Minnesota 21, Michigan 20—The Little Brown Jug rivalry breaks down the form sheet. The Gophers are winless, but the return of Phil Hagen who passed for 204 yards against Ohio State has added a new dimension.
Iowa 32, Michigan State 29—A hunch that the Spartans are bound to have a letdown after their high pitch in defeating Michigan. And the Hawkeyes will take advantage of it at homecoming time. The game will be televised.
Ohio State 34, Illinois 20—The No. 1 Buckeyes go for their 19th straight victory. The Illini are 0-5. Just because the Illini were the last team to beat the Bucks at home (17-13 in 1967), don’t try to make something out of it.
Purdue 27, Northwestern 20—The Boilermakers will be celebrating homecoming and although they have lost some of their sizzle lately, they should have the defensive savvy to check rampaging Mike Adamle.
Indiana 35, Wisconsin 10—Old grads return to Badgerland but that rooting incentive won’t be enough. If Wisconsin can’t regroup its defense, the Hoosiers should romp. They have added something new—fullback Hank Pogue. He pinged 171 yards through Illinois.
