The icy surface of Whitmore Lake was transformed into a motor racing daredevil's delight over the weekend as the roar and smoke of two-stroke snowmobile and motorcycle engines filled the air. Racers could either run a circular course (above left) or a half-mile straightaway. A racer (above) waits for the go signal on the half-mile straightaway where the fastest racers approached 110 mph (lower left). For those with sensitive eardrums or just more interested in hair than dare, there was the much quieter beard contest. Judge Lois West tugs the beard of Maurice Pomerleau, who won the prize for 'fullest beard.'
